Special to the Anza Valley Outlook

The January luncheon meeting of the Thimble Club was held Thursday, Jan. 3. The invocation was given by Myrna Hawthorn. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ann Johnson. Lunch was a taco salad with meat, beans, lettuce, and cheese with choices of guacamole, sour cream and salsa (both mild and moderately hot). Dessert was orange sherbet served with a delicious Pirouette (a French vanilla filled rolled wafer). Cooks were Sue Kraft, Betty Thompson, Myrna Hawthorn, Carol Stalman, Vicki DeMenge, and Anna Cleveland.

The special feature was a presentation given by Marilyn Peck, Flavia Kreig and Sandi Hughes on disaster preparedness and by Kathy Wood on CPR for Laypersons. Kathy is an expert who gives classes in CPR training. Anyone interested in getting CPR certified, contact Kathy at 763-2999.

Flavia spoke about MCOR which prepares for both short term and long term emergencies. The presentation by Sandi regarded CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). CERT groups across the nation are comprised of people in neighborhoods.

someday they may need to depend upon each other to return their communities to normalcy as quickly after an emergency as possible. Visit www.AnzaCERTteam.info to learn more about the Anza Cert Team, or call Sandi Hughes at 763-0471. The next local CERT training is June 21-23. Marilyn Peck’s presentation covered basic preparedness. DAS means Disaster Aid Station. It is a collection point for hill residents and visitors and business in an emergency. It is not a substitute for your personal preparedness needs. CERT search and rescue teams and damage assessment teams deploy from these DAS units. We were given lists of what to collect now, before a disaster, to get prepared. The ideal storage container is a 55-gallon can. The lists covered clothing, bedding and sanitation supplies.

Raffle Drawings: The unwrapped gift was won by Annie Ashby; the wrapped gift by Barbara Cobb; and the 50/50 of $28.50 by Tonie Ford.

The "Thought for the Day" was given by Annie Ashby.
